Topic: Determine which firmware fits your Penbex Radio

Hello Ionut,
what are your mainly preferred stations out of our list of Romanian radio stations?
It may help you a little, if we do a repair on a small number of stations at the moment.
Regards, Nobi

The Penbex devices are not able to play AAC streams.
Besides that, the database is a community effort. This means that it is as good as the changes that the users put in it.
I already pay for the penbex domain and constructed a replacement database/web interface so that these old machines stay alive.
I do update streams all the time but there is only so much spare time to keep things going.
So you have to participate a bit yourself as well

I just installed the firmware on a Cobra CIR2000e EU version and worked perfectly. Thank you for modifying the firmware and putting so much effort into this.
However I wanted to ask if somebody still checks the online radios database, as I found allot of broken ones. I'm from Romania and once I've entered the Romanian folder, found more than 15 offline or error processing. I could barely find 2 of 20 that finally worked and broadcasts.
  thank you once again
,Ionut

Hi, last December 2nd I got message in the blog and by email that a new firmware for Ravon Phaedora (Fenda product) "a firmware update for Fenda is being created".
Now I read on the forum that without an old firmware there are 0 chance it can be fixed. Should I have no hope? How can I get old firmware from Fenda product? I have sold hundreds of pieces and I would like to give my customers some solution.
Could I send the product to you? Can you find solution with product in your hands? I am willing to contribute to your job hoping you can assist me.
Thank you.

Hello,

I don't known why my last post is not visible (firefox 34.0.1 ??) so I put it again.

What about firmware for Olympia 300? When will it be ready?

Robert

Today I updated my Odys MusicBox from 2.0.0.18 to 2.0.0.23. It now works again. The menus and the settings are much better than before.

It took me a while to get it installed, here are some tips in case someone else also has to update:
  • Use an 'old' USB stick, I used a 256Mb from Kingston. I'm not sure if this is important, but for me it worked to do a new format with FAT32 and allocation unit size of 512 bytes
  • Remove the WiFi dongle before the update, otherwise it takes ages before the USB stick is recognized.
  • Do a factory reset: without the reset the directory of the USB stick is not recognized. Before the reset I got every time the message "No Source!"
Then I updated the firmware without an issue. I had to reconfigure the WiFi, but it did not work, it did at least 3 retries. I canceled it. I had to change the security from WPA to WPA2. I reentered the WiFi details and it worked in under a minute.

Thanks to all others with tips and for the updated firmware!

If you downloaded the firmware from our server and installed that, you should have the Worldstations working again...

Hello william and other users,

I have an ODYS Musicbox which has lost its stations. I was given your link and the upgrade ODYS-2.0.0.23.zip
from AXDIA in Germany but the software, although follwing the instructions has not helped!

I would be grateful for any help and advice.

The version data seems to be the same as other users quoted ( eg Debbie)

OS: ODYS-2.0.0.23

SW: 20080410.0.1.99uP Ver: 0x25

Thanks a lot for your quick answer; I as well called the company DNT (seller  of the IPmicro) which told me the same: The gracenote-feature is directly implemented in the original firmware because of licence- and contract reasons...

Hi, Correct, Gracenote is only available when licensed and paid for which I think they did when they released it.
I am not sure if a company has to pay each year to keep Gracenote working. If so it would indeed be a matter of Gracenote kicking out the device due to not being paid anymore as the Penbex company went bankrupt.
However, it is more likely that a one time payment is enough and that the Gracenote API has changed after that. The API means the commands a device uses to call to the Gracenote database.
If new commands to request cd details were introduced at some point in time and the firmware did not get updated because Penbex is gone, so the device simply stops working with Gracenote.

To clarify: if gracenote is no longer working, it will not be fixed in a future firmware release.

Dear William/PENBEX!

Thanks a lot for your quick answer; I as well called the company DNT (seller  of the IPmicro) which told me the same: The gracenote-feature is directly implemented in the original firmware because of licence- and contract reasons...

It's a pity, but "what the heck". Anyway, after  I installed the apropriate firmwares both our devices work properly in terms of internetradio functionability... Maybe one day somebody finds a way to bring gracenote back to life under the limit of "a years work", but why isn't it possible to "read out" the original firmware and just modify the "identification code" of the requesting servers (which then should be those of listenlife.nl maybe)?
Probably you then as well would have to pay licence fees, and if you do not get enough donations by users it is a problem. Did  you think about an easier way to connect to gracenote, and then collect the licence money by donations or somehow else?

However, many thanx for  your help!

when can we expect a firmware for Olympia 300?

hopefully soon..

Gracenote is not working. It has been broken for a long time iirc it was already broken in some firmwares before the end of Penbex (which was in 2011) and they did not bother to fix it.
Note that even though the source of the firmware was published (only a very early firmware version), the gracenote part was closed source as that did not fall under GPL.
Fixing just the Gracenote would probably cost more than a year which is time I do not have available.

Besides that, the devices are not worth to spend so much time on getting one feature back..
They already lack other features, like not being able to play AAC streams, which can not be added as the hardware is too slow.

Dear William,

once again you did a great job and helped preventing my DNT IPMicro from gradually turning into a black brick. I just flashed the new 2.0 tree firmware and it worked like a charm. I bought the device specifically for its iRadio feature and you helped restoring it after the end of Penbex.

I just realized, that the Gracenote feature is gone. I guess this is not a bug of the firmware but also linked to the Penbex end, for you have to buy the Gracenote service for a company. Is there any way of replacing the Gracenote feature with something like freedb.org?

Anyway....you just did great on the new firmware!!!!!

Thanks a billion!!!!!!
Stivo

Hi there,

I know, this very question about the gracenote function is "out-of-topic", but is there any other threat which answers it? I as well would like to use the gracenote information while playing audio CDs, and apparently it really does not work... Is there a way to get the gracenote-informations with your firmware? I use a Watson 1790, and my girlfried uses a IPmico, which both we bought on Ebay two weeks ago.

Would be very kind, if anybody nows anything about GRACENOT!

Yours,
Elmo

Hi William,

when can we expect a firmware for Olympia 300?

For Watson you need to use the file KW-1004-2.0.0.23.zip
That is the only file that will work!

Also, it is useless to load a new bootloader onto the watson as the only bootloader that we have available is what is already on the watson.

If the file fails verification, there is only one reason it fails:
Your SD card or USB stick is not working properly with the Watson. Remember that the Watson is old and is not capable of properly handling SDHC cards or USB sticks with more than 2 GB.
You should get a USB stick with max 2 GB of memory and FAT or FAT32 formatting.
Alternatively use a SD card with max. 2GB of memory and FAT or FAT32 formatting.
Just try a bunch of older cards. Even a 128MB stick or card will do. Hint: check old phones or camera's...

This applies even if you have been able to use a larger stick in the poast with music on it. For music it is not so important if a bit inside the mp3 files is wrong..
For a firmware update it would be a device killer and thus the firmware verification routine is VERY strict!

Please, can You send me a Watson KW-1004-2.0.0.18 firmware and working version of colilo upg? My version is KW-1004-2.0.0.17 beta and last versions of colilo and KW-1004-2.0.0.23 do not pass successfully. Or is anywhere available an old versions archive? If it is, please, send me a download link.
Thank You very much.
Regards, Alois

Hi I tried using Kw-1315117-2.0.0.23 on my Centrios 1315117, I downloaded it into a folder on my laptop, then extracted it, I then took the KW-1315117-2.0.0.23.upg file and copied it to my Flash Drive. When I went to Setup>Firmware Upgrade>Upgrade and answered Yes..I saw no file found..Any suggestions?

Finally figured out how to post in your forum..sorry for previous mishaps.

Penbex - you are a GENIUS. Thank you. I was on the verge of wondering what on earth to do with a quite new Cobra cir2000e which suddenly had no internet radio function - the only reason we bought it!  All sorted now, thanks to your brilliance. A donation to follow! Cheers.

Hi, The database is as maintained by the users. Some countries are fully up-to-date others lack updates..
You can send updates or post on the forum if you are looking for some particular stations then one of the moderators will take care of it.

The firmware is 99% the Original firmware. The only thing that is changed is where the device gets its station updates from.
What you describe is probably present in the unmodified firmware as well.. Do a factory reset to make sure no old settings are left in the eeprom parts of the device.. Old settings could be used differently in this firmware..

Both IR006 and Fenda I can fix.. I just need some time to make the needed changes..

Hi William, my radio model is Ravon W231 (Phaedora) made by Fenda. The OS is: FENDA-2.0.0.34.

I have tried to install one by one all firmware from the list, but none works. Some give "error" during installation, others seems to be installed, but when choose Worldstation" message is: "Service not available".

And in the information from menu, the firmware always is FENDA-2.0.0.34.

Any help? Thank you from Milan - Manrico

I got a 2 GB USB stick from a friend and this time the update worked! It seems that not all WorldStation stations are working, but many of them. Have to check thoroughly though.

Yes, it is formatted with FAT32.

I will check if I find a stick with max. 2 GB somewhere ...

Make sure it is fat or fat32 formatted.
a stick with a size smaller than 4Gb is better though..

I found my old 4 GB Cruzer USB stick. I am pretty much sure that I did the last Odys update (the last official from Odys) back in 2011 or so with that USB stick.

But still the same: "No source" ...

I combine parts from various firmwares. Due to this the "text strings" inside the firmware are not always exactly matching the device name.
This does not at all influence the operation of the device and is just a cosmetic thing.
Don't worry about it.

Thanks!

I will look if I have an older, smaller USB stick sitting around somewhere.

Hello so glad to find your informative site. I have not seen a reference to Merlin device but mine is the Penbex model wifi radio- details below from settings information. Which download could I use? Thanks.

The Centrios is exactly the same model (hardware wise) as the KW-1004, IPMicro, Goodmans and several others.
If you are using the KW1004 firmware from here then there is no need to load a Centrios firmware because on the inside the firmwares are 100% the same.

I think that I might be using the wrong firmware.  For the longest time I thought I had the KW-1004 because it is a Centrios.  Now on the back I see it is a Centrios Model 1315117. Should I try to change to the KW-1315117 software?  Is there a way to do that?  I appreciate the efforts, especially with the changing media sources.

I will keep on digging to see what is wrong though.

Hello, I have the same problem as Debbie: (3) Formatfehler!

I just flashed my KW-1004 with the Odys firmware.
I will keep on digging to see what is wrong though.

Further investigation does not reveal anything odd. The server logs show that there are no connection attempts from your IP adresses.
Other persons with the same firmware do not seem to have similar problems. Did you try a wired connection?

Technically it is possible but you would have to update the bootloader first (bootloader updates have more risk than regular updates).
However, it is really not needed because the Akira and KW-1004 2.0.0.23 firmwares are 100% the same!!

In fact the latest official firmware from the factory for the Akira is version 1.0.3.62.
I had to modify the newer v2 firmwares from the KW1004 to get the Akira in a better shape.

Hello,

I have updated with the Kw-1004-2.0.0.23 and now it works.

Is this possible now to update with the akira firmware?

Thanks.

Yes you can.
It seems you previously changed the bootloader to be a generic KW1004. So you need to update with the firmware for the KW1004.

Hello,

My radio is an Akira MCC-B04W@U  ;
With
F/W Ver: 2.0.0
uP Ver : 0x25
OS ver : KW-1004-2.0.0.18 beta build 01/11/11-1822

I have made a factory reset and set the language to english

and when I test the modified firmware Kw-1004-akira-2.0.0.23 the upgrade doesn't work : it proofs the firmware on the usb or on the sd but reboot immediately.

Can I test the Kw-1004-2.0.0.23?

Thanks.

Hello, I have the same problem as Debbie: (3) Formatfehler!

I just flashed my KW-1004 with the Odys firmware.
So far all seems to be fine.
I can use the i.radio feature and browse the countries.
Only some buttons on the front panel are working but it is ok.

I am using the device with a wired lan cable.
I dont have the USB dongle here at the moment (still in some box) so I cant try wireless.

Aha, I can fix the language thing I think.. Let me take a look
Ok, should be fixed.. try again in Swedish

I did the FW-update as recommended, actually two times, but every time I got something like "No service available". But then I thought I could test to switch the system-language to English (I used Swedish) and magically it worked. That may be strange, but that's the way it happened.
Now I have to help to find the invalid stations. I already found some, but it's not so easy to pinpoint them because of same or nearly same name for some addresses. Example: Deutschlandradio.

Thank you "penbex" for your work! Now we can hope for a longer time using our devices.

Hello Debbie, what was the firmware version that was on your Odys before the upgrade?

Hello,
before using the modified firmware, which I got from the support of Odys in 2011, (OS:ODYS-2.0.0.23 alpha build 01/13/11-1131 SW:20080410.0.1.99  uP Ver:0x25 BOOT:070502-06)  I used the original software.
Version OS.ODYS-1.0.3.25.build 01/23/08-1205
SW: 20080107.0.195

By the way after upgrading I made a reset!

Debbie

If your Internet Radio used to work with the "Worldstation" service you have a Radio manufactured by Taiwanese company 'Penbex'.
Penbex went bankrupt and the Worldstation service has been offline. Due to this your radio has become useless.

We have modified the Penbex firmware to connect to our server. This will let you use your Radio again.
Additionally it also gives you an option to connect the account on our server to "MyFavorites" on your Radio so that you can create custom station lists.

To determine what Penbex Radio you have a few things are important.
First check the brand name and model number.
Next turn on the radio, go to settings. Select "information" and scroll down to the detail section.
You will see something like:

[ Detail ]
OS Ver.:
KW-1004 ...

Besides the brand & model this is the second important part.
Look in the download section for firmsware that specifically mentions your brand & model or when this is not listed find one that matches the OS version.

If you brand, model and OS version are not listed then reply to this post with your details so we can try to add support for your Radio as well.

Firmware update instructions:

Upgrade firmware by using USB / SD/MMC

1. Get an accurate firmware version (please check your brand and model number and OS version from the information screen)

2. Copy the file [image.upg] to the root directory on an USB disk or SD/MMC card.

3. Insert the USB disk or SD/MMC card into the USB connector or SD/MMC slot.

4. Press [Setting] button, then scroll up/down to [Upgrade] and press [SELECT/OK] button.

5. Scroll up/down to [Yes] and then press the [SELECT/OK] button to upgrade.

6.Your Radio will restart automatically after finishing the upgrade process.

7. Your Radio must not be switched off and also do not press any function key during the upgrade procedure.

NOTE: It strongly recommended to resetting all settings after the system is upgraded. (eg. perform a factory reset)

Best Regards,
William
