Topic: What is this Penbex Radio device?

Thanks very much for looking into this further.  Yes, I can now get to stations in the North America section of World Stations, and I can play some of them.  Unfortunately, I still get "Service Not Available" for a lot of them - notably the Canadian CBC Music and CBC Radio 2 stations of most interest to me - so I guess these are no longer compatible.
Nevertheless, I still have some good classical music stations to listen to.
On some stations - especially BBC Radio 3 and occasionally Classic FM from London - I still get problems with garbled sound.  This happens either immediately when I select them or after a few minutes of playing them.  It is as though the sequences of audio packets start to interfere with each other, or are not getting decoded correctly.
Thanks again for your help with this.  It has certainly helped to improve the functionality of my Penbex radio.

Ahh, good info.. I have made some more changes.. lets see if that helps.

BR,
William

Thank you for following up on this.
Unfortunately, I still just get "Service Not Available" when I go to each of the directories (provinces/territories) in the Canada section of the "World Stations" menu.
I have just noticed that I also get "Service Not Available" when I go to each of the directories (states) in the US section.
When I select the Mexico section, I get "(1) Unknown Format!"
I get stations for all the other regions in the "World Stations" menu (Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, Central America, South America, Oceania), so it seems to be just a North America problem.

There should be 100's of stations in the various provinces as you can see here:

I have made some changes so that dates are refreshed and should not give caching issues.
Lets see if your device will pick them up now.

Thank you very much for responding to each of the problems noted in my previous e-mail (3 Jan).
I have tried today to find stations in the Canada section, but for every directory (i.e. province/territory) I still just get "Service Not Available".

I still have access to a number of good stations (outside Canada); my favourite is "Venice Classic Radio".

It still works somewhat with limited functionality.  For example, on the "World Station" menu, I can only get access to a reduced number of the stations that are shown on Listenlive.nl

It is right that you have less stations in your list compared to what we have on the site.
This is caused by the fact that the Penbex devices can not handle the newer stream encodings.
Due to this we hide the entries that can not be played.

There are no stations at all for Canada on the Centrios 1315117 "World Station" menu.

That is not what it should be. I have fixed the Canadian section.
This should be filled with stations again (depending on how quickly cached data by the radio device gets updated)

Also the "Shoutcast" menu does not contain any stations.

That is correct. We do not support/maintain the shoutcast section.
There might be ways to push some other lists into that section though.

On some stations (e.g. Classic FM and BBC Radio 3), the streamed audio starts to get garbled after a few minutes of listening.  Sometimes on selecting a station, it will start to buffer and then stop with no sound.
I do not have enough technical knowledge to diagnose or fix these problems.  If you have enough knowledge to suggest what might be causing these problems and whether or not they can be fixed, I would be grateful for any advice.

Buffer and stop is the result of incorrect stream url's. The url's might actually work fine but the Penbex cant handle/parse it correctly.
A solution could be to dig deeper into the stream url and put that in the list (eg. when a .pls link does not work right, it contains a link inside that probably works)
The garbled sound is something that should be on the station's side.

I also have a Penbex internet radio - the Centrios 1315117.  I am using the KW-1315117-2.0.0.23.upg firmware.
It still works somewhat with limited functionality.  For example, on the "World Station" menu, I can only get access to a reduced number of the stations that are shown on Listenlive.nl

Hi EdwinK,
I get also an confusing status "Register" with the selection of "Files", but the file download itself is okay with my Firefox browser.
Did you try the same procedure by using a different browser?

... and I found: in the status logged-in I see the option LOGOUT indicated, but with selection FILES I see REGISTER.

kw-1004-1.0.3.67.zip

kw-1004-2.0.0.15.zip

Both of them will work in your radio. Download a firmware, put it on a USB stick and do the firmware upgrade from the menu. Once you have loaded one of these firmwaes, you are no longer using the penbex site but you will be using our site. (remember that you can always go back to the original Penbex firmware)

>Also can I manually add new stations with, for example, an USB?

There is no way to load new stations manually through USB or so..  However, you can add new stations on this website if its not already listed (we have like 3 times more than Penbex) and add them to "My favorites" to get them in a seperate section on your radio. Once its there you can also store it as one of the 10 favorite presets that the radio has.

I have not a Penbex Radio,so your device(Penbex Radio or others) maybe will get a different result.

Hi,

When you say "I added", what does it mean? Can you post a new firmware that has those additions?

The 3 stations I asked for do play on all other IRadios I have (Sanyo, Aluratek and several Android Tablets and iPod), but not on my Centrios.

Centrios CAN record. It would be great if it played these.

I see Radio Humor listed twice. One says "Station not available", the other tries to connect, but in about 2 seconds fails.

That even with cable, not wifi.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

Muticek

I added

rtsp://streamer5.evanovradio.com/live/CKDXFM

for  "88.5 The Jewel rtsp"   http://www.listenlive.nl/show.php?id=34979

the stream can be played in VLC,but it cann't be played in Skytc(lookeetv).

I updated something, maybe someone updated others, now 6 entries for Radio Humor are working on Skytc(LookeeTV 7 inch).

Quote:

However I did not find several stations, that are available on other systems.

Would it be possible to add:

Czech Republic: Radio Humor (aka AB Humor). It is listed, but does not play.

Canada: AM740 -Zoomer Radio

FM88.5 Jewel. Also listed but bad link?

Hi, if a station is listed and not working there are a number of options:
- the stream is dead, station changed the URL
- the stream works but not on your device. (for example your device does not support AAC streams)
- the stream works but settings for your device are not correct. On the SkyTC based devices the stream url is given to "mplayer" which is the core media player software for these devices. It handles everything related to the stream and recognizes whatever it needs to recognize.. The Penbex devices are using a very basic audioplayer and it has to be told what type the stream is. In some cases it even needs to be told 'íncorrectly' to work.. :/
There are 5 or 6 entries for Radio Humor, did none of them work?

I updated Zoomer. Try this  http://www.listenlive.nl/show.php?id=19901

The Jewel url seems to be correct but either is geographically blocked or is down for technical reasons. All URL's I have are not functioning.
The only thing that does play is the popup player on their website. This is however a flash player that uses rtmp://69.55.59.91/live which probably needs some settings from the flash app to get the stream playing. rtmp streams are also not supported on Penbex devices.

Thank you for 2.0 firmware.

However I did not find several stations, that are available on other systems.

Would it be possible to add:

Czech Republic: Radio Humor (aka AB Humor). It is listed, but does not play.

Canada: AM740 -Zoomer Radio

FM88.5 Jewel. Also listed but bad link?

muticek

The Kw-1004-2.0.0.15 Firmware works very well, but I have the same problem with German radio station. All lot of errors.
I made a downgrade KW-1004-1.0.3.29 and a online Update to S Ver: KW-1004-1.0.3.62 build 09/12/08-1744, it works fine.

After installing KW-1004-2.0.0.15 i cant make a online Firmware Update to the original firmware, is this correct?

Is it possible to use the firmware KW-1004-2.0.0.15, becaus the Podcast function is very nice, and use the original original radio station list from Watson?

Hello,

You should be able to load any KW-1004 firmware from an USB stick or SDCard. So you can go back and forth between firmwares. There is no need for online updates.

It is correct that once you have loaded a modified firmware you can not do an online update to an newer official firmware.
This is blocked on purpose because:
a) you can always load an official firmware manually.
b) Penbex made it possible to have an automatic update which means you could go from a modified version to an official version without really knowing it.
Currently you have full control over your radio, now imagine Penbex automatically loads something new and close all doors withthe update so you have no more way to update yourself..

If you want you can grab the latest official firmware from the download area. This gives you just the new firmware with podcast support and it uses the official Penbex database.

I do have to tell you that the official Penbex German radio list is not that great either lots of dead links as well.
Note that the database here has a bunch of stations that will not play (like AAC streams that the Penbex radio can not handle but some other deivces we support can)

There is a simple solution to dead links that and this is what the modified firmware and this server is meant for.. Modify them yourself so that they work again!
If everyone does that the database will be great. I spend a lot of time correcting streams myself but there is only so much spare time and I also want to play a bit with the hardware and the modifications..
The whole idea is to have control by the community and not by a manufacturer that fails to release new firmwares. In fact Penbex only seems to make firmwares for new models and abandon the ones they have shipped out.

The official Penbex list is something that can not be controlled. When you request modifications it can take a long time and in some cases you never hear back. The database you have here with the modified firmware can be controlled by yourself. You can:
a) modify station details in the general database (I need to give you moderator rights for that but anyone who asks get that)
b) add stations directly to your private list. Only you will see them and you have full control over that. You can even make links to your home server etc.

Best Regards,
William

Thanks,
I’m testing kw-1004-2.0.0.15 and it’s working well. But I have a couple of questions.
How can I learn about the different things in the new firmware?

In 2.0.0.15 one of the new things is that a stream can continue to play while you are navigating to other menu options. This was not possible in the 1.xx versions.

Hi,

Thanks for your remarks.

The manual/datasheet page was broken. I have fixed that.

Regarding the errors, I am working on this. But with 17.000 streams it will take a bit of time to fix errors.

One of the problems is that some stream types are listed inccorectly. When the stream type is changed they work. I am working on it.

I recently got a Neon MicroHiFi Internet Radio. It is a decent stand alone Internet radio player. However, there were some things that did not work out for me. So I started to do some research on the hardware/firmware side of it. I will post my finding here on the forum. If you have additional information do not hold back and post it in a comment or mail me at William.Jansen@gmx.net

The following brands all appear to be based on the same hardware:
DMTech, Watson, ctiradio, Joybien, eradio, KW-1004, HipShing, Goodmans, Proline, Neon, ClasOhlson, Orchard, Yusan, Zylux, Logik, Sabre, MPMan, Uptoday, LA302, Olympia, Centrios, Amitech, Odys, Forworld2, Boom, VEGA, Pbirkit, IRM8001, Lafayette, DNT IPMicro, Akira, SL-D960, GP-60X, PBXBoom2-SI, Pbirkit2, Konig HAV-20/21/22

You can not load a firmware created for one model into the other model even though the hardware is the same. There are ways around this though.

If you are interested in getting a Penbex device, I suggest that you check out Akira
